Baby Sleeping Bags
Baby sleeping bags are popular due to their versatility, safeness and comfort. They can be used in baby travel cots, moses baskets, cots and even car seats. Unlike blankets, they cannot be kicked off or pulled over faces, and they maintain a constant and comfortable temperature. Importantly, they will also make your baby feel safe and secure wherever they are sleeping, because they will always have the reassuring presence of their familiar baby sleep sack.
While shopping for a baby sleeping bag the most important thing to consider, after age suitability of course, is the tog rating. If you not sure which tog your baby needs, skip down to our tog rating guide.
Your baby may develop their own preference about how warmly they like to be wrapped at night, but as a guide:
24 degrees Celsius (75 Fahrenheit) or higher - 0.5 tog
21 degrees Celsius (70 Fahrenheit) - 1 tog
18 degrees Celsius (65 Fahrenheit) - 2.5 tog
16 degrees Celsius (60 Fahrenheit) or below - 2.5 tog plus one blanket
Don't forget, overheating is dangerous for babies. Never cover the baby sleep sack with more than one layer of blanket, or with any additional covering if the nursery temperature is over 16 degrees Celsius.
For peace of mind that you are keeping your baby at the right temperature, you may want to purchase a nursery thermometer.
What nightwear should I use underneath the baby sleeping bag?
To keep you baby at the optimum temperature you don't just need to consider appropriate tog ratings, you need to think about what your baby should wear in bed. We recommend:
24 degrees Celsius (75 Fahrenheit) or higher - just a nappy
21 degrees Celsius (70 Fahrenheit) - sleeveless babygro
18 degrees Celsius (65 Fahrenheit) - babygro with long sleeves
16 degrees Celsius (60 Fahrenheit) - pyjamas or sleepsuit
If your baby has a fever, he will need to be dressed more lightly or you should use a lower tog rating to avoid overheating.
